Chimneys require an annual inspection. If you have a wood burning fireplace you should have your chimney cleaned every year. The damper should be inspected and if you are concerned about air leakage you can have a roof top damper installed. Lock-Top makes and excellent chimney top damper. I just installed one myself and it was very easy. I ordered the Lock-top damper from the United States and it cost less than $200 Canadian.

Your chimney should have a chimney cap on it to keep the weather out of the flue and will prolong the life of your chimney. A good cap keeps critters out too; racoons love to nest in chimneys if they can.
